Welcome to the historic Gotwald home. Robert Gotwald built this home in 1897 for his brother Frederick Gebhart Gotwald and his new bride, Julia Agnes Small. The Gotwald family were prominent Lutherans in Springfield who started many churches back in the 1800’s, including First Lutheran Church, two blocks north of the home. Fred graduated from Wittenberg University. Although he studied law, Fred became a Lutheran pastor like his father.

Robert also designed the next two homes (505 and 515) right beside 501 N. Fountain Ave. Both built for the Gotwald Family. We fondly call this block “The Gotwald Block”.
